Turning the Tide: Making Life Better for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Schoolchildren presents a qualitative study of deaf and hard of hearing (dhh) individuals who spent a sizeable proportion of their K-12 years as the only deaf children in their schools. Authors Oliva and Lytle discuss the challenges their subjects reported about friendship, identity, and support services. These stories demonstrate how dhh students need social as well as academic support to attain an equitable education.
